Climate Modeling Workshop at LCOY 2025

17.05.2025

How do scientists study the Earth’s climate? At the Local Conference of Youth (LCOY, lcoy.at) Austria 2025 in Vienna, Aiko Voigt and Maximilian Meindl from our department led a 2.5-hour interactive workshop introducing participants to the fundamentals of climate modeling.

The workshop offered insights into how climate models work, what they can tell us about the future, and how “digital twins” of the Earth are created to simulate complex climate systems. Participants learned how these models are used to predict the effects of greenhouse gas emissions, melting ice, and changing ocean patterns.

In the practical part of the session, participants worked hands-on with the Copernicus Climate Change Atlas  — a powerful tool that visualizes historical and projected climate data for different regions of the world. They explored how variables such as temperature, precipitation and snow cover have changed over time and how they are expected to evolve under different emissions scenarios. This gave them a chance to directly investigate how climate change might impact specific areas.

By working directly with real climate data, participants were able to apply what they had learned and gain a deeper understanding of how to explore and communicate the realities of climate change.
