The IMGW at Planet Earth Day

12.05.2025

On the Sunday following Earth Day and just in time for the start of EGU25 in Vienna – Europe’s largest geoscience conference with around 20,000 participants – the Geocenter at the University of Vienna opened its doors for Planet Earth Day.

From 1:00 PM to 5:30 PM, the Geocenter transformed into a “Science Market,” where visitors explored, discussed and played.

Also the Department of Meteorology and Geophysics (IMGW) was on hand with two topics:

"Our Wonderful Environment"
For the Meteorology Georg Thalassinos, Kaushambi Jyoti, Dorian Spät, Alessandra Cera, and Magdalena Fritz provided engaging explanations of the differences between weather and climate and offered insights into the basics of cloud formation.

"The world under our feet"
The motto in Seismology was “Watch out, earthquake danger!”. Richard Kramer and Yongki Aiman informed visitors about the causes of earthquakes and the structure of the earth. At the mobile earthquake station, young and old were also able to obtain the much sought-after “earthquake diploma”.

A big thank you to everyone who helped make this special day possible!
