New computer classroom put into operations

24.03.2011

The new Departmental computer classroom has been put into operations in March 2011. The remodeling of the computer classroom was initiated by Prof. Grubišić, who secured funding from the Faculty's Investment Fund as part of her startup package. Honoring the proud legacy of the Theoretical Meteorology Chair at the University of Vienna, she has also initiated the procedure to have the new computer classroom named after the internationally renowned Austrian meteorologist and geophysicist Felix Maria von Exner-Ewarten (1876-1930).

The room is equipped with 12 27“ iMac workstations (11 for students, one for the teacher) and a MacPro server. A broad range of software applications for scientific data analysis, visualization and desktop publishing is available. In addition to the Apple software, the free software package VirtualBox makes it possible to run Linux and Windows applications locally on the workstations. All computers are connected to the local area network insuring access to the Internet as well as other Departemental servers and printers.

The room is primarily intended for computer oriented courses with up to 22 students. Presentations by lecturers can be displayed at a 65“ LCD screen in front of the room; additionally they can be broadcast via VNC to every workstation. The room is also available for smaller meetings of the Department staff, for thesis defenses, and as a working place for students doing their thesis research.
