Inauguration of the Felix Exner Classroom

30.06.2011

The closing weeks of this year's summer semester saw the grand opening of the new departmental computer classroom dedicated to the Austrian meteorologist and geophysicist Felix Maria Exner von Ewarten (1876-1930).

The new computer classroom, initiated by Prof. Grubišić to support the department's lecturers and students in computer-aided courses, had been put into operation in March 2011, well-timed for the start of the summer semester. The classroom is equipped with 12 iMac workstations managed via a MacPro server and offers a broad range of software applications for scientific data analysis, visualisation and desktop publishing to its users.
In her inaugural address at the opening ceremony, given in presence of the Dean of the Faculty and members of the Exner family residing in Vienna today, Prof. Grubišić pointed out the importance of Felix Exner's achievements to modern dynamic meteorology. As one of his key contributions to the advancement of the field in the early twentieth century, she honoured the first successful, yet little-known, numerical weather prediction effort that provided a forecast of the pressure field. Besides his portrait, the work and legacy of Felix Maria Exner is commemorated by two large weather maps in the back of the new classroom depicting the remarkable results of his computations.
