An initial study into weather observation uncertainty over South Africa

Abstrakt

In this study we apply a similar perturbation technique for the quantification of observation uncertainty on a dense observation network to that of a sparsely distributed rainfall network over South Africa. The influence on the forecast verification measures of the resulting ensemble of observations is then compared to verification measures using traditionally applied interpolated deterministic gridded rainfall data. The study determines the sensitivity and use of the perturbation methodology presented in gaining insight into the impact of sparse rain gauge distribution and observation uncertainty in determining the accuracy of a rainfall forecast.
