Seismo-acoustic recordings of thunder recorded on the AlpArray

07.05.2018

During the evening and night hours of Wednesday, May 2, a strong thunderstorm front has hit the eastern part of Austria. In a few hours, more than 100,000 lightnings sparked. The resulting thunder was clearly recorded by the earthquake stations of the AlpArray project. They act as a highly sensitive microphone - with the ground as a membrane.

Here you can listen to a sample recording. The data were recorded in the Au at Stockerau from about 11pm. To make the signals audible to humans, they are played 5x faster than in real time. (sound track play here)
